Momus and Agathe (Short Story)

Original Story by: May Anne Joy D. Romanes majromanes57@gmail.com Once upon a time, there lived a very beautiful woman named Agathe. Agathe was not only beautiful but also she had a special talent. Agathe can make everyone sleep with her voice. Her mother have discovered this talent that she had soon after she learned how to hum a tune; hence, she forbade her to make any melody nor sing, in order to keep her away from people who might abused her skill. Momus, the Greek god of mockery and satires, have been so bored in Mount Olympus. He was punished by his mother Nyx, the goddess of night, because of the jokes he played with the other gods. He was not particularly affected with the punishment because he can get away easily from his mother through his clever tricks. As he flew away from the home of the gods and goddesses, he pulled some jokes on the men and women he found on the streets of Athens. He made himself into a cow and ate all the apples

Leaders and Change (Short Essay)

by May Anne Joy D. Romanes majromanes57@gmail.com           A lot has been said and written about leadership.  As a matter of fact, there might be more negative, than positive notes about it.  Nevertheless, it would be more beneficial to swim in a river of positive things about leadership than to loathe a filthy river of negativity of management. A good leader grows their people, and at the same time, grows up with them (Green as cited by Brainy Quote, n.d.).  Surely, who would not want to pride themselves of being the best and brightest in the pack; however, life had never been generous with perfection ; hence, people must change in order to improve.  Change, as a word, is well-loved and well-used by a myriad of leaders.  The thing is, everyone seems to like the idea of change; however, if the things that need to be changed were pointed out, often, negative reactions result.   This leaves people puzzled, whether people genuinely want change, or not.  Heifetz (as

Contingency Theory of Leadership and Distributed Leadership (Short Essay)

by: May Anne Joy D. Romanes majromanes57@gmail.com           One of the concepts, which is closely associated with leadership, is power.  The leader in the past is hailed as the sole powerful person in the organization; however, this scheme has proven to be more impractical and tiring for the leaders.  As a result, leaders learned to make little leaders out of their more skilled members.  A lot of questions arise from this however, such as the motive of the leader in empowering the members, and the confidence of the leaders to achieve goals themselves in the midst of the whirlwind of work.  The leader might be misinterpreted that he/she is not serious in doing what is commonly expected of him/her.  Also, tradition has still its influence over how people think today.  For instance, a leader might be thought as being lazy and incompetent when he/she lets members become little leaders, because it is not traditional to do so.  Further, society is not used to see the leaders fade o

Instructional and Moral Leadership (Short Essay)

by May Anne Joy D. Romanes majromanes57@gmail.com        One of the most important characteristics of good leaders is having strong moral authority (Covey, 2011).  Moral authority means living by principles to garner the respect and esteem of others (Covey, 2011).  It causes a leader to embody the values crucial for the organization (e.g. honesty, fairness).  It is more of setting standards of conduct in the organization through the yardstick of morality of its leader.  Also, it is the foundation for sustainability, because lack of it can contribute to problems that will eventually bring the organization and its people down.           If morality can be strengthened in the organization through its leader, would it be true that immoral leaders can weaken it?  In certain instances, this can be true.  Although there are differences on how morality has been instilled to us since we were young, influence of those we regularly work with, especially those who are above us in t

Leadership and Change (Short Essay)

by May Anne Joy D. Romanes majromanes57@gmail.com           There is no success without change.   Like metamorphosis, change may seem to be a quiet, painful, and going-to-nowhere process, but if we, as leaders, keep on believing, things will eventually be in our favor.  We either win in our quest or learn from our mistakes (Mandela, 1994).  With this in mind, we must recognize that change should start within us, for if leaders cannot do the change themselves, how can they ask for it from their members?  However, change, in reality, is not palatable to most.  Most people want change without sacrificing anything for it.  They are yet to realize that change breeds success.           A caterpillar only becomes a butterfly when it wants to fly so much that it is willing to give up being a caterpillar (Paulus, 1972).  This is the same with the people in an organization.  People do not realize that they would struggle more when they decide to stay in their present situation, whe

Leadership and Love (Short Essay)

by: May Anne Joy D. Romanes       majromanes57@gmail.com (in reference with the 11th to 21st Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell)     Over the years, leadership has been tainted with a myriad of issues.   Leadership nowadays is commonly associated with the unscrupulous leaders, illegal transactions, and deteriorating organizational health.  Yet there is some truth that not all leadership is good, this should not hinder people from believing that good leadership is still possible.                  Good leadership is about having a good relationship.  President Banda of Malawi in Africa (as cited by Saldinger, 2015) even pointed that leadership is a love affair.  In her speech (as cited by Saldinger, 2015), she said that leadership is about the leader falling in love with people, and people falling in love in return .  In this process, the elements of good leadership come into the surface.                 There are 11 important elements that can contribu

Ambon, Ulan at Bagyo (Tula)
